A brief note of the above pogramme :

With more than 65.1 million diabetics in India, according to the latest International Diabetes Federation (IDF) statistics, the diabetes is reaching pandemic proportions. Its incidence is growing each passing day as a result of sedentary lifestyle. Based on studies, experts say that every 30 seconds, one person loses a leg due to diabetes across the world.

A total of 1,676 people with diabetes were screened for foot care in eight hours on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, according the event a place in the Guinness World Records. Cities that were part of this event included Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Puducherry, Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur.

The previous record for the most foot screenings was held by Kaiser Permanente, San Diego – 521 screenings in 11 locations. M. Fortuna Burke, adjudicator from the Guinness World Records said that for the current record, screenings took place simultaneously across 27 locations. Several patients who got their feet tested for free during the camp said such screening camps would go a long way in reducing the number of amputations that are done as a result of diabetics foot complications.

The blue lightings to be the centre for all World Diabetes Day-related grass-roots activities and events, reinforcing the link between the colour blue and diabetes, and strengthening recognition of the Blue Circle as the global symbol of diabetes. Chennai Central Station was lit blue on World Diabetes Day on 14th November, 2013 – an initiative by M.V.Hospital for Diabetes Royapuram & Southern Indian Railway.

Prof. M Viswanathan National Award for excellence in medical teaching and medical care was awarded to Prof. K Srinivasan, Consultant Physician & Neurologist, Madurai and Dr. John E. Anderson, President, American Diabetes Association was honoured with the DRC Oration Gold Medal - 2012 and a Citation. Yet another initiative was the launch of Indo-Pakistan Diabetes prevention program with the exchange of MoU between Dr.Vijay Viswanathan, President, Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai, India and Prof. Samad Shera, Director, Secretary General, Diabetes Association of Pakistan and the launch of logo depicting 40 years of diabetes research.
