THE LEGACY
MV Diabetes has its origins in the early 1950s, when India was still in its infancy, and qualified doctors and well-appointed hospitals were hard to come by. And diabetes was a relatively unknown disease. Yet, nothing deterred Prof. M. Viswanathan, a young doctor who graduated from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, from starting MV Hospital as a general hospital. In 1971 it became a hospital exclusively for diabetes care.
Over the next 50 years, Under Prof. M. Viswanathan’s professional and administrative leadership, the hospital has grown to achieve the status of a teaching institution of international excellence. In the words of Paul Zimmet of Australia an internationally respected WHO Consultant in Diabetes, “The Diabetes Research Centre is an outstanding example of how pursuit of a dream and excellence produces exotic fruits. There are few centres in the world that can match the all-round capabilities of your Centre in — Care, Education, Research and Prevention. These include papers on collaborative research projects with various international research institutes including London University Hospital, UK., Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and other leading research centers in the US and Australia.
Prof. Viswanathan combined erudition, scholarship, and talent with sterling character and came to be referred to as ‘The Father of Diabetes in India”. His ambition was, “that something had to be done to alleviate the suffering of the diabetic patient… and that “every person having diabetes should be helped to live his normal span of life in health.”
He passed away on Ist March 1996 after carrying a relentless crusade in the areas of diabetes care and research. His passion and visionary zeal inspire every one of us at MV Diabetes to fulfill his ultimate, unfinished dream ~ a world without diabetes.

Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, M.D., Ph.D. FRCP is the Head and Chief Diabetologist at the MV Hospital for Diabetes. Known as the doyen of Diabetic foot care in India, he did his Ph.D. in Diabetic Nephropathy, the country’s first Ph.D. in Diabetes. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Vivian Fonseca Award. Medical Education
In 1940, Prof. Viswanathan entered Stanley Medical College in Chennai and obtained his medical degree in 1946. In 1942, during the Quit India Movement young Viswanathan, with his selfless idealism and patriotism, hoisted the Indian tricolor in the Stanley Medical College Hostel. He evicted himself from the hostel. He was provided with food, shelter, and emotional support for a few weeks by Professor K.C. Paul of the college and hospital. This was the beginning of a fruitful relationship that changed the very concept of diabetes research and care.
Diabetes Research Centre
In 1971, Professor Viswanathan left government service to focus on diabetes care and research. A non-profit organization was established in 1972 called the Diabetes Research Centre. The Founder and Director have driven its phenomenal growth through their zeal, enthusiasm, dedication, and professional and administrative leadership. The ICMR recognized it in 1975, and the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India recognized it in 1983.
Prevention of diabetes mellitus research
Prof. Viswanathan has published more than 250 peer-reviewed research papers and articles in various prestigious national and international journals.` These include papers on collaborative research projects with various international research institutes. These include London University Hospital, U.K., Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and other leading research centers in the US and Australia.
The entire set up is an organisation built to provide modern outpatient and inpatient services to diabetes patients and their families. The hospital is recognised by several public sector undertakings and corporations and large private sector companies for the purpose of treating their executives and employees.
